Alleged rhino poachers arrested near Pretoria

RUSTENBURG, April 5 (ANA) – Four suspected rhino poachers were arrested in Wintersveld north of Pretoria, North West police said on Wednesday.

Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the four aged between 26 and 46 were arrested on Tuesday, for conspiracy to commit rhino poaching.

He said the men entered the Madikwe Game Reserve on March 29, and allegedly killed a rhino. The police got information and responded in order to effect arrest.

“The suspects allegedly saw the police, then abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot to evade arrest. Upon searching the suspects’ vehicle, the police found a rifle, knives and two rhino horns inside. As part of the investigation, leads were followed and that led to the arrest.”

The suspects were expected to appear in the Zeerust Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, facing charges of conspiracy to commit rhino as well as possession of firearm and rhino horns.
