A 32-year-old man who seemingly hitched a ride on a police van was arrested for murder in Kakamas in the Northern Cape.
According to police, a local Sergeant, Essie Esterhuyse, was called out to a murder scene in town on Saturday when the suspect jumped onto the back of his van.
The Sergeant, who was on his way to the crime scene at Dassie Compound, returned to the police station to question the "hitchhiker".
When they arrived at the station the Sergeant noticed bloodstains on the trousers of the man and told his colleagues to keep an eye on him while he returned to the crime scene.
Upon arriving at the scene, Esterhuyse found the body of a woman who was allegedly stabbed with a sharp object and beaten to death.
When he interviewed witnesses, it was established that the man he had given a lift to, was in a relationship with the deceased.
The 32-year-old man was subsequently arrested for the murder of his girlfriend.
The Acting District Commissioner of ZFM District, Brigadier Johny Besnaar has commended Sergeant Esterhuyse's investigative skills which led to the arrest of the suspect.
