An alleged drug mule who was arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) over the weekend has made his first court appearance.

The 29-year-old was identified as Latvian National, Raitis Dreijers who entered the country on a flight from Brazil.

Hawks Spokesperson Colonel Philani Nkwalase said Dreijers had been refused entrance to the country by the Department of Home Affairs and was subsequently escorted to Customs.

He says when his bag was searched, officers found cocaine valued at approximately R2.15 million.

Colonel Nkwalase says the cocaine was soaked and dried into rugs, packed inside his luggage.

Dreijers abandoned his bail application in the Kempton Park Magistrates Court on Monday where the case was remanded to the end of August.

This means that the accused will spend nine weeks in custody before having another court appearance.
