Eastern Cape police have arrested six suspects aged between 27 and 29 in less than two hours after they allegedly shot and killed a man in KwaMaqoma (formerly Ford Beaufort) and fled with a cellphone.

Spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli says the incident happened late on Monday afternoon at around 17:30.

He says the victim, identified as 40-year-old Bulelani Dayile, was seated in the kitchen of his Mbewu Street home when four suspects entered the house.

The other two were in a getaway vehicle outside, Nkohli said.

Nkohli says one of the men who entered the house was armed with a firearm and allegedly shot and killed Dayile – who was later declared dead at the scene.

“It is said that the suspects managed to steal a cellphone, before fleeing the scene,” Nkohli said.

“Immediately, that information [of the shooting] was transmitted to all police radio channels.

“At about 19:00, the vehicle fitting the description was spotted on the N2 near Kinkelbos, and was pulled off the road.

“The six men are due to appear in the KwaMaqoma magistrate's court on Thursday, 13 March 2025, on charges of murder, house robbery, possession of stolen property and possession of unlicenced firearm and ammunition.”

The Sarah Baartman DOCC Commander, Colonel Andries Landman commended members for the speedy reaction.
