JOHANNESBURG, April (ANA) - South African women, including prominent figures and celebrities, on Friday wore all black and head-scarfs in honour of the late "Mother of the Nation" Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
Madikizela-Mandela, who died on Monday at a Johannesburg hospital after a short illness, was a revered matriarchal figure in the struggle against apartheid and continued to enjoy respect in and out of political circles in the country until her death.
As the country observes 10 days of mourning before Madikizela-Mandela's special official funeral, South African women took to social media to share their pictures under the hashtag #AllBlackWithADoek, complete with her trademark revolutionary raising of the fist.
Women including Cabinet ministers Ayanda Dlodlo, Lindiwe Zulu, Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, radio and TV personalities Azania Ndoro, Iman Rappetti, donned headscarves to celebrate the life and times of former president Nelson Mandela's second wife.
An "All Black Night for Mama Winnie" has also been scheduled at Newton Music Factory, Johannesburg, on Friday night.
Madikizela-Mandela will be laid to rest in Johannesburg next Saturday following a funeral service at Orlando Stadium.
