Afriforum Jeug admits to PR stunt at Tuks

X

The University of Pretoria (Tuks) has strongly condemned what they called a public relations stunt carried out by mischievous individuals at the entrances of the Hatfield Campus.

This follows the placement of "no whites allowed" stickers on certain entrances on Monday morning.

The University says they are firmly committed to upholding the principles of non-discrimination and diversity and will take immediate disciplinary action against those responsible.

A few hours after a statement from Tuks was issued, the youth wing of the Civil Rights Organization Afriforum took to X to admit that they were the culprits.

In a series of tweets, AfriForum Jeug said they were forced to take drastic measures to put the spotlight on what they called racial exclusion and the university’s double standards.

In September, members of the EFF student command were suspended from participating in the SRC elections when a protest broke out on campus where EFF members allegedly intimidated white and coloured students, chanting that only black students were allowed.

Since the incident, AfriForum Jeug has called on the University to deregister the EFF Student Command.

Campaign Officer at AfriForum Louis Boshoff said they have written numerous letters to Tuks management that were ignored.

He says this frustrated their members who decided to take a different approach to get answers.

"University management reacted quickly, condemning the protest action and threatening disciplinary action against individuals responsible for putting up the stickers.

"It is shocking that the university reacts so quickly and heated to a protest against racial exclusion on their campus, while those who are guilty of actual racial exclusion bear no consequences for their actions," said Boshoff.

Tuks said South Africa's history is marked by a complex legacy of systemic discrimination, and as a society, they are actively working to redress these historical injustices.

"Our university plays an integral role in this endeavour, striving to create an inclusive and equitable environment for everyone.

We encourage constructive dialogue and engagement to address concerns related to racial issues, and we remain committed to fostering an atmosphere of respect and understanding within our community".
