AfriForum escalates campaign against farm murders

AfriForum says it will be escalating its campaign against farm murders.

The organisation unveiled a new action plan in Centurion on Thursday, following a wave of farm attacks this year, including at least two in the Eastern Cape which left three people dead.

Afriforum's head of Community of Safety, Ian Cameron, says there are two legs to their strategy.

"Firstly we will look at an awareness campaign and to get attention from government to start assisting farmers in the country regarding farm attacks, and having a decent rural safety strategy. After that we are looking at practical ways in how we can assist farmers to be independent from government in protecting themselves, because they are not doing anything"

Cameron says they want to pressurise Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa to prioritise farm attacks.

He adds that the issue of farm attacks is not about race.

"I want to emphasize that Afriforum does not see farm murders as specifically only a racial issue, yes there might sometimes be a racial attack but it is very difficult to look at it that way and we cant be narrow minded about it" Many black farmers are also being attacked as we have seen recently in the Eastern Cape and Pretoria" he said
