Abalone bags ejected from car after high-speed chase with cops

A 21-year-old man who lost control of his vehicle after fleeing from police has been arrested after bags full of abalone ejected from his car.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi says members attached to the K9 Unit in Paarl noticed a suspicious SUV on the R45 between Hermanus and Franschhoek on Thursday and gave chase.

He says a high-speed chase ensued and the driver lost control of his vehicle.

Members inspected the ejected bags and discovered almost 4 963 units of abalone worth R250,000.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Paarl Magistrates court this week.
