24 perish in horror Limpopo crash

Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, has expressed his shock at weekend road accidents that have claimed dozens of lives, including 24 people in a Limpopo crash.

The Transport Department said on Monday that Sunday night's collision on R81 in Maphalle, in Limpopo, involved a bus and mini-bus taxi.

Department spokesperson, Ayanda Allie-Paine, said that it is believed that the occupants of the mini-bus were returning from Youth Day celebrations when the accident happened.

Allie-Paine said all the deceased were in the minibus taxi.

The Road Traffic Management Corporatin and the police will be investigating allegations that the minibus was overloaded with 10 people when the collision happened.  This resulted in 24 fatalities from the minibus and three injuries from the bus."

Meanwhile, six people died on the same stretch of road earlier on Sunday morning when two cars collided head-on.

In another crash in Mpumalanga province, six people died, including children aged between the ages of two and thirteen, when two sedans collided on the R55 between Emalahleni and Verena.
