15 killed when train hits taxi in horror KZN accident


Fifteen people were killed when a minibus taxi went down an embankment and landed on a railway line before being hit by a passenger train.

The horror accident occurred Monday afternoon north of Durban.

According to reports the taxi,with an estimated 20 people on board, left the N-2 near Shaka's Head, shot through a stop street and then went down an embankment before landing in the path of the oncoming train.

Six other people were injured in the overloaded taxi, while no train passengers were hurt.

KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu said he was shocked at the scale of the accident.

Chris Botha of Netcare 911 says the "vehicle actually broke up and we found accident debris, bits of motor vehicle and people spread over a large area" at the crash."
