Call centre workers manning the police emergency number 10111 are embarking on a strike on Wednesday, the South African Police Union (SAPU) said.
The union, which reached a deadlock over wage talks, said it members were among the lowest paid call centre workers. SAPU said members taking part in the strike “were protected” but warned the work stoppage would result in the employer instituting a no-work no-pay policy.
The 24-hour crime reporting 10111 call centre deals with complaints by the public.
The police said they have made contingency plans to ensure the service remains operational.
