"Vaccine passport" the new buzzword in SA

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says its monitoring the government's plans to introduce a vaccine passport.

Chairperson, Bongani Majola, says at this stage, it's difficult to comment as this has not been introduced as yet.

However, he says the SAHRC will be particularly interested in whether peoples' rights will be violated by the introduction of vaccine passports if they've not been vaccinated.

Mandatory vaccinations have been introduced in several countries leading to widespread protests.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, during his address to the nation on Sunday, briefly mentioned vaccine passports that could be used at certain events.

Earlier this month Government said they wanted all unvaccinated people, especially adults and those at high risk of developing severe illness, to get the "jab" as soon as possible.

The Department of Health recently acknowledged that despite the benefits that could come with a vaccine passport, it is not an easy policy to implement.

President Ramaphosa directed the cabinet to probe all possible ideas that could help open the country, including vaccine passports.
