'Abusive' NW step-dad arrested, guns and ammo seized

SAPS

North West police have arrested a 40-year-old man on a farm in Keimoes near Upington and rescued a mother and three children “from an abusive spouse and stepfather.”

The arrest was made on Wednesday by members of Keimoes SAPS, Upington Border police, Upington K9 and Kakamas FCS Units after a family member raised the alarm.

According to a SAPS statement, there were also reports of the 15-year-old girl being sexually abused by the stepfather and the 10-year-old boy being assaulted.

“It was also discovered that the mother was emotionally abused since February 2021.”

Police said when the team arrived at the farm they found the stepfather in possession of a pistol with the serial number filed off and a homemade shotgun.

“The members also discovered 508 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 60 rounds of 6.35mm ammunition, five R5 magazines and 4 x 9mm magazines,” police said.

The man was arrested on charges of contravening the Family Violence Act including emotional abuse, sexual abuse and assault as well as being in the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

The woman and her children were taken to a place of safety while the step-dad is due to appear in court soon.
