Who is CHOC?

CHOC is a non-profit organisation made up of caring, committed and passionate people who stand up for and support the well-being of children and teenagers diagnosed with cancer or life threatening blood disorders and their families.

Why they exist

CHOC aims to save lives through early detection and making the journey of those who are affected by childhood cancer, less burdensome through the comprehensive support programmes we offer.

What they offer:

professional emotional support
emotional support
accommodation close to treatment centres
transport to and from treatment centres
support groups (including parent supporting parent groups)
CHOC interactive learning programme and other activities run by volunteers
transport assistance to ensure every child and caregiver can return for treatment
nutritional support

Debbie Kleinenberg, CHOC's Regional Manager Eastern Cape, joined Brian to chat about the life-changing work CHOC does in the Border region for children with cancer. CHOC is this years' Virtual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer beneficiary.

The Virtual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer is fast approaching, and this year it's all in aid of children with cancer. Dr Johani Vemeulen, the head Paediatric Oncologist at the Provincial Hospital, joined Charl to talk about cancer in children and the essential work that CHOC, the Big Walk beneficiary, does in support of many of their young patients and their families.

The Algoa FM Virtual Big Walk For Cancer is the biggest charity participation event in the Eastern Cape. As this year’s beneficiary is CHOC, Kaycee was joined by Hedley Lewis, their Chief Executive Officer, for a special edition of Algoa Cares.

CHOC is the Virtual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer 2021 beneficiary and they are focusing on nutrition for children suffering from cancer – as well as the importance of balanced meals for their families and caregivers.

An average of 70 959 meals are served by CHOC annually to children and their caregivers living in CHOC houses during treatment.
