'Put moratorium on president, Cabinet pay hikes'

Johannesburg, Jan 23 (I-Net Bridge) - The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has called on government to place a moratorium on salary increases for all public representatives including the president, members of Cabinet and premiers for the next three years.

This, the league said following its Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee meeting on Sunday, would act as an interim measure to raise more resources "which must be directed towards provision of basic services to our communities".

The league also wanted the ministerial hand book to be reviewed, "which should help in cutting some of the benefits given to members of the executive; with an express purpose of cutting luxuries and saving public resources for better usage in service delivery".

It added that in the present "difficult and trying times", the leadership had to demonstrate solidarity with the poor through its actions.

Furthermore, the private sector had to be reined in, "because they have not shown enough commitment towards the project of nation building and job creation".

The league suggested government impose "heavy tax on the rich who continue to display opulence".

It said legislation would be introduced that would "force the private sector" to address the wage gap between the executives of big companies and ordinary workers.

The ANCYL also called for the scrapping of tenders, "because in most instances they are a source of corruption".
