Mossel Bay municipality warns against eating shellfish due to possible red tide

The Mossel Bay Municipality has issued a warning to residents not to eat shellfish collected from the sea due to a possible red-tide.

According to municipality spokesperson, Harry Hill, dead white mussels were recently found in the Great Brak River area.

He said this may have been a result of red tide.

Stephen Lamberth from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, said currently there were harmful algal blooms in the ocean from Cape Point to Mossel Bay.

He said a red tide results in shellfish poisoning adding that “fish mortalities might occur in estuaries in the area.”

Lambeth said the Walker and Gansbaai abalone farms lost R50m in of stock in the last week due to the same occurrence.
