Thousands of smokers in South Africa were shocked to learn that their cigarettes were not considered an essential item.
South Africans who did not stock up on alcohol and smokes will more than likely experience a rather ‘dry’ lockdown. Condoms, however, made it onto the essential list.
Food:
Any food product, including non-alcoholic beverages.
Pet food.
Chemicals, packaging and ancillary products used in the production of any food product.
Cleaning and hygiene products, including pads, tampons and condoms.
Hand sanitiser, disinfectants, soap, alcohol for industrial use, household cleaning products, and personal protective equipment.
Chemicals, packaging and ancillary products used in the production of any of the above.
Fuel, including coal and gas and basic goods like airtime and electricity.
It is not yet clear how shops will enforce the "no smokes" policy.
