What Melbourne did for International Woen's Day

"In celebration of International Women’s Day, Melbourne are replacing the red and green man at traffic lights with a female.

The city will be the first in Australia to have a woman as the silhouette on a crossing signal. If you’re wondering to whom the silhouette belongs, it’s of Mary Rogers, the first female elected to local government in Victoria.

‘She was one of the first women to be appointed a Justice of the Peace in Victoria in 1928, and later was a special magistrate at the Children’s Court in Richmond’, said City of Yarra Mayor Roberto Colanzi.

‘By all accounts, an extraordinary woman’.

The new pedestrian signals will be located at the intersection of Bridge Road and Bosisto Street in Richmond. They’ll be unveiled in May, and will remain for at least a 12-month commemorative period."
