I think this is quite sad actually, but … "A Thai university is the latest place to try and cut down on accidents caused by people walking and texting - with a specified pedestrian lane for those who can’t put down their smartphone.
Kaset sart University is trying out the initiative, which was put forward by students.People who are texting or using smartphones can use one side of the 500-metre path, while the other is for people walking freely. According to the student who devised the initiative, students rushing past other students on their phone end up walking on the road, which can be dangerous.
As constant mobile phone use becomes common around the world, more and more places are trying out similar ideas. Similar lanes already exist in China and Belgium. In Washington DC, a pedestrian phone lane was put in place as part of a National Geographic show, which was used as a behavioral experiment.
Liverpool recently introduced a fast-walking lane in a shopping area so people are not encumbered by dawdlers.
The issue of mobile phone users can be an aggravation to others on the sidewalk, but can also pose safety issues."
