Wait for babies is risky

THE next breakthrough fertility treatment could be a return to a good old-fashioned romp at a younger age, a leading reproductive specialist has suggested.

British fertility expert Siladitya Bhattacharya said too many women have taken the sex out of reproduction and were pinning false hope to technology to help them have a baby in their mid-30s.

Speaking at the 14th World Congress on Human Reproduction in Melbourne, Dr Bhattacharya said the best guarantee of falling pregnant is for women to try for a baby while they were still in their 20s.

"The fertility breakthrough of the 21st century could be good old-fashioned home conception at a younger age," he said.

"My message to society at large is that family planning means planning for the family you wish to have, not delaying conception until it may be too late."

Dr Bhattacharya, a professor of reproductive medicine at the University of Aberdeen, said women who took the pill at 16 and expected to fall pregnant over 35 without complications risked disappointment.
