The Maxdo Shopping Centre in Changning district has unveiled four new women-only car parking spaces in its underground lot. According to reports, the spaces are wider than the average parking bay and, naturally, have been painted pink. There's also a simplified 'female image' painted onto the spaces to demarcate them from the rest of the car park.
Although these are not the first female-only parking spaces in , Maxdo's initiative has unsurprisingly garnered plenty of attention.
But it’s not all bad… Defending against accusations of sexism, the shopping centre reportedly said that the spaces had been created in the interest of safety, pointing out that the bays were close to the lifts and featured an emergency intercom system on the adjacent pillars.
A Mr Zhou from Huibo Parking, the company responsible for the car park, also stated that the idea 'came from abroad.. Zhou argued that this was not a case of 'negative gender discrimination', but was merely aimed at making things more convenient for Maxdo's female visitors.
