"At this year’s Brazil Open, four stray dogs found jobs that required them to do the one thing they love most: play a game of fetch.
The shelter dogs – Frida, Isabelle, Mel, and Costela – were originally found starving in Sao Paulo’s poorest areas. To give them a new lease on life, they were trained as ‘ball dogs’ in an exhibition match between Carballes Baena and Gastao Elias.
The video below shows the canines dressed in orange and gleefully chasing after balls that go out of play – much to the delight of the players and the crowd.
‘We want to show that abandoned dogs can be adopted and trained’, said Andrea Beckert, a trainer at the Association of Animal Wellbeing. ‘After all, it’s not easy to get a dog to only pick up lost balls, and then to give them up!’"
