Busy Saturday Show

I love reading the Readers Digest, and found this article very interesting… have only taken out a few points, which I thought you might enjoy.

Advice on "finding “some quirky and vital things:
Relief from an aching back:
Before calling the chiropractor or physio - try spending a few days without your wallet or hand bag. Men's wallets can be so thick, that they press on nerves when sat on for any length of time. Likewise, women's handbags can weigh 4kg's or more and can twist the body in all sorts of weird ways.

The ideal diet:
Stop going from fad to fad, instead take the advice from Ellie Kruger - author of healthy recipes for every day of the week. Ask yourself one question before embarking on any diet, and that is "Can I eat this way for the rest of my life?" If the answer is now, then it's not worth the effort as you will eventually come off the diet. Only diets that are sustainable are ultimately successful.

A Ripe Watermelon:
Choose an assortment of watermelons of a similar size - check for the following:
WEIGHT - Heavier is always better. A watermelon is 92%water
YELLOW BELLY - The bottom of the melon should be a creamy yellow - if its white, it means it was picked prematurely.
THUMP - Put them on the counter and give each one a smack with your palm, the more hollow it sounds - the sweeter it is. And yes... people will look at you funny in the shop, but it's worth it :)

The fountain of youth - What is the fountain of youth?
Exactly what it suggests - water! According to Clinical nutritionist Dr Douglas KAlman, the body is 55-65% water. Being just 2% under hydrated can make you feel and look years older (I admit to drinking a glass of water after reading that)

Today we chatted about the Olympic Opening Ceremony

London's Opening ceremony has been classed as a bit dull by some - I really enjoyed it. I loved seeing Daniel Craig with the Corgies, Mr Bean and of course DAvid Beckham.
"Voldemort in the olympic stadium, chariots of fire, shakespeare, James Bond and the Queen.... such a British thing to do. LOVED IT ! But only Brits could really tell that the ceremony was packed with British things such as films like Gregory's girl and Coronation Street"

Fun facts:
The opening ceremony was directed by Oscar-winning Danny Boyle, who directed Trainspotting, 127 Hours andSlumdog Millionaire (among other films). The opening ceremony was titled ‘Isles of Wonder’ and will be inspired by Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. According to reports it cost £27 million to produce.

The opening ceremony was a huge production involving 10,000 cast and crew. The opening sequence contained farm animals such as sheep, horses, chicken and geese in a British countryside setting

Paul McCartney will close the opening ceremony with "Hey Jude." The closing ceremony will reportedly feature the biggest names in UK music, with performances from Queen, Annie Lennox, Take That, George Michael, The Pet Shop Boys and Madness in an event called ‘A Symphony of British Music.’ There's talk that the Spice Girls will reunite for a performance. Jessie J and One Direction will bring their star power and attract younger fans, while The Who will close out the closing ceremony.

British fashion will be celebrated at the closing ceremony, with some of the UK’s top models strutting their stuff in clothes from British designers.
Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Lily Cole, Stella Tennant, Lily Donaldson and Georgia May Jagger will walk in designs from Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney and Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen to David Bowie’s song "Fashion

Strange and Interesting events happening worldwide this week:
Great Texas Mosquito Festival
If the idea of meeting the world's largest mosquito fills you with dread, then avoid the Great Texas Mosquito Festival, held at Clute Municipal Park. Each July the residents decide to celebrate the fact that they have bloodsuckers in abundance.
As well as the Willie Man-Chew (a 26-foot inflatable Texan mosquito replete with cowboy hat and boots), there are live bands, a goat-roping competition, BBQ fajita cook-off, paintball contest, magic, mosquito legs (where the winner is the person with the skinniest legs) and mosquito-calling competitions.

Lumberjack World Championships
Sawdust flies and chainsaws roar at the adrenalin-fuelled Lumberjack World Championships in Hayward, Wisconsin. Contestants test their strength and agility as they climb 90-foot poles, splinter enormous tree trunks, or tip each other into the water during the log-rolling competition.
More than 12,000 spectators gather every year to watch 200 lumberjacks and lumberjillschopping, sawing, rolling, climbing and felling for more than US$50,000 of prize money. Yes, a lumberjill really is a female lumberjack. The incredible female athletes that get involved in this competition are becoming a major attraction at the event.

Unicorn Festival
A medieval fantasy attracting elves, witches and all kinds of imaginary creatures to Vinci, the Unicorn Festival fills Leonardo's hometown with duels, magic shows, archery contests and Gothic music. When night falls, the "alley of fear" spreads a mysterious mood...

Mud Olympics
if you're in your element just rolling around in some good, honest mud, head for Brunsbüttel on the River Elbe for the annual Mud Olympics. Teams slip and slide about competing in all kinds of sports, from football to skiing.
As well as the best sporting performances, prizes are awarded in such bizarre categories as Funniest Team Name, Best Fans and Funniest Team
.
