Welcome to another week!
One of the features I love on the Saturday show is taking a look at some strange and interesting events happening worldwide during the week. This week had some exceptional ones!
Chur Festival and Alpine Beard Festival
Head to the Swiss Alps for a beauty contest with a twist this summer. Wild whiskers and marvellous moustaches are the focus of Alpine Beard Festival, a highlight of the popular summertime Chur Festival.
Around 60 hairy men compete for the title of best beard and the festival as a whole attracts around 100,000 with food stalls and musical entertainment.
Elvis Week
Elvis Presley, 42, died on August 16, 1977, having completed 23 years in show business. In commemoration of the man who changed the face of 20th-century music, Graceland offers an entire week of celebrations.
As you would imagine, Elvis Week is not merely a local event. Worshippers from all over the globe mix with new fans to pay homage to the main man with music, dance, sports, social and charitable events.
Although schedules change from year to year, there are a few things that always feature during Elvis Week: the Candlelight Vigil, the Elvis 5K Run for Cerebral Palsy, along with Southern Breakfasts and live entertainment.
Many say, however, that the best thing about Elvis Week is the people. Fans are ubiquitous; carrying flowers, teddy bears, candles and photographs and generally slathering on the southern hospitality in healthy doses.
Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships
Every August, the small Finnish town of Savonlinna plays host to the Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships. The unusual event attracts hundreds of participants from around the world, eager to test this very special skill.
Participants can compete in several categories: original, which is the traditional "over the shoulder" throw; freestyle, based on length of the throw; aesthetics, style and creative choreographic; and Juniors, for children 12 years and under.
The organiser provides the official World Championships' mobile phones - there are all kinds of brands and models available to choose from.
Isle of Wight Garlic Festival
The pungent bulb takes centre stage at the Isle of Wight Garlic Festival, held at Newchurch Showground. Raising money for local charities, there's an entire marquee devoted to garlic cookery demonstrations, garlic-infused foods, music, acrobatics and arts and crafts.
The Garlic Marquee boasts garlic roasted popcorn, garlic ice cream, garlic yogurt, garlic beer, garlic lemonade, garlic fudge...you get the general idea. Some sound natural, others don't. Nonetheless, they must be popular, reappearing at the festival year in, year out. Whether they make you popular is another matter.
Other than that, the week has been quiet. Loved the better weekend weather… but only because I got to catch up on LOADS of washing (ahh, the joys of being an adult and a parent)
Gabriel is doing well with his sleeping, and Hayden is just hilarious. He looked at me the other day and said “Mommy, what you talking about?” …. And he loves talking to the dog that we adopted, he gets very frustrated when she won’t listen to him… now he knows how I feel sometimes ?
