Port Elizabeth Police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving, after an Intercape bus with 33 passengers on board, left the R334 road near the Coega Hotel on Thursday night.
Police spokesperson, Constable Mncedi Mbombo, said the 51-year-old driver claimed that the brakes had failled, and he decided to drive straight to bushes along the road.
He said five passengers were slightly injured and were taken to hospital for treatment.
Mbombo said the bus was travelling from Greenacres, via Uitenhage, to Pretoria.
He said the bus had been impounded.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape Department of Education has expressed its condolences after a Grade R teacher was killed in a road accident between Graaff Reinet and Port Elizabeth on Wednesday.
Department spokesperson, Mali Mtima said a minibus taxi was transporting 14 Grade R Educators to Port Elizabeth when the accident happened.
He said one of the passengers died hours after arriving at the Uitenhage Provincial hospital.
Mtima said the educators from Graaff Reinet were travelling to Port Elizabeth for the departmental laptop roll-out programme, which was aimed to equip all officials to use the latest technology in order to perform their duties.
Eight of the thirteen who survived, were treated in local hospitals.
The Department of Education said it would share more information on any developments regarding the passengers still in hospital.
