A former Eastern Cape policeman has been jailed for nine years on charges of fraud and theft.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said that 43-year-old Mkhanyiseli Mashiyi, who was also convicted of defeating the end of justice, was jailed in the East London Regional Court on Thursday.
He said the policeman developed a reputation for preying on people who he found in comprising positions during his night shifts.
Mashiyi was arrested in December 2012 with the case a taking a long time to conclude because of “delays by the defence.”
Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga, welcomed the sentence saying that he had tainted the reputation of the SAPS.
