The Unemployment People's Movement (UPM) has welcomed the Grahamstown High Court ruling in Makhanda to have the Makana Municipality Council dissolved.
In a judgment handed down on behalf of Judge Igna Stretch on Tuesday, the court ordered for a new administration to be appointed until a new council is elected.
UPM Spokesperson Ayanda Kota says they took the issue to court following years of maladministration, the total collapse of service delivery and the growing water crisis in the City.
"We are vindicated by the Court. Once people unite, people will always win. We are excited and we welcome the judgment. It sets a precedent for all the communities that are fighting against the corrupt political elite in our country," he said.
And in a statement on Tuesday, the Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape also welcomed the ruling.
DA Provincial Leader Nqaba Bhanga said the party would consider taking the same route to dissolve the council of the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality in Komani.
Bhanga said the municipality has also been plagued by maladministration and a total collapse of service deliver
The Eastern Cape Provincial Government notes the judgment.
Spokesperson Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha says they will now study the Judgment to understand the specifics before further steps are taken.
