Port Alfred K9 unit's “Ounooi” stable after near-fatal stabbing

“Ounooi”, a six-year-old Belgian Sheperd attached to the Port Alfred K9 unit is in a stable condition, after she was stabbed in the early hours of Saturday morning by a housebreaking suspect.

Police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender says members of unit responded to the scene and tracks of the suspects were followed onto the beach, where the dog handler spotted one suspect running.

She says he warned him to stop, but the suspect ignored the instruction and continued running.

The handler then released Ounooi and while she attempted to apprehend the suspect, the offender then stabbed the dog in the upper body and in the chest area.

Weak from the stab wounds, Ounooi collapsed and the suspect ran away.

Ounooi was taken to the local vet for medical treatment.

Captain Govender says the stab wounds damaged muscles close to her heart.

She is currently in a stable condition and has been book off-duty to recuperate.

A search for the suspect was conducted but with negative results.

The local NSRI was mobilised and there is still no sign of the suspect.

The search continues.
