Municipal team robbed in Nelson Mandela Bay

Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Mongameli Bobani, is urging residents to allow Municipal employees to deliver services to the communities safely.

This followed an attack on a team of municipal workers last Friday in which a ‘sewerage blockage’ team was accosted and robbed at gunpoint in Katyu Street, Zwide.

Three days earlier, an ambulance crew was robbed at gunpoint of a cellphone in Kwazakele.

The Municipality said one of the four staff in Friday's incident was badly injured and had to be hospitalized after being robbed of their personal belongings.

The assailants also stole working tools belonging to the Municipality.

Mayor Bobani has condemned the incidents, saying these criminal acts have resulted in service delivery teams refusing to go into various areas to render services to communities as they fear for their lives.

“This has a serious negative effect on service delivery areas, like fixing of water leaks, potholes, stormwater drains and other infrastructure-related work,” he said.

"I call upon the public to protect Municipal workers who do service delivery work. I call upon you to work with the law enforcement agencies to make sure that these criminals are put behind bars," said Mayor Bobani.
