Walmer golf and country club closes doors after 76 years

The Walmer Country Club in Port Elizabeth has closed its doors due to growing financial debt and poor trading conditions.

The 76 year-old club has seen the number of rounds through the golf course drop by half this year already.

Gary Packer has been the club pro at Walmer Country Club for the past 29 years and told Algoa FM on Sunday that he was taking all his products home and closing up shop.

Club President Mike Crichton said that for a number of years now, the club had been pinning its hopes of survival on a land deal and plans for the St Christopher’s School to occupy the clubhouse.

However, neither deal had been forthcoming and Crichton said they simply could not continue.

He said there was a mounting electricity bill and 12 staff who would now be out of work as the club had no means to pay them.

Crichton said he remained hopeful that the St Christopher’s School deal would still happen in the foreseeable future but that for now, Walmer Country Club would remain closed.
