'Hijacked' mortuary vehicle recovered with corpse still inside

The Eastern Cape health department forensic vehicle that was allegedly hijacked with a female corpse inside has been found.

Health Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo says the vehicle was apparently hijacked near Kambi Village on the R61 on Monday evening and found near Mthatha, where it had overturned.

He says the corpse was still inside.

The Ford Ranger was branded in the colours of the Eastern Cape forensic department and had a converted canopy.

Kupelo says the driver told them that he was hijacked when he relieved himself on the side of the road.

He says the circumstances surrounding the alleged hijacking will be thoroughly investigated.

Kupelo says a planned autopsy on the corpse can also now proceed.

Police Spokesperson Captain Dineo Koena says the vehicle was reported stolen at 8 pm on Monday night.

She says the vehicle was transporting a body from one of the funeral parlours in Ngcobo to a pathology lab in Mthatha.

Koena says when police discovered the vehicle they also found the driver's cellphones and wallet in a nearby donga.

Fingerprints have been lifted from the van and no arrests have been made.
