The police watchdog body, IPID, will be investigating the death of a man in police holding cells in Gelvandale in Port Elizabeth.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says the 30-year-old man was arrested at Livingstone Hospital on Tuesday morning for allegedly stealing a cell phone.
She said he was found hanging in his cell at around 11.30. He used his T-shirt.
Naidu said an inquest docket has been opened but she added that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate will also investigate the case.
The name of the deceased has not yet been released.
