A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to an effective 24 years in prison after he raped a paraplegic woman in her house in Bethelsdorp.
Bongani Mdunyelwa was sentenced 28 years in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates court on Monday for rape and housebreaking.
Some of his sentences will run concurrently.
Police Spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says in January last year the 23-year-old victim was awoken by Mdunyelwa who ordered her to keep quiet while he raped her.
She says at the time of the incident the suspect was unknown but the victim managed to identify him less than a month later.
Mdunyelwa was denied bail and remained in custody throughout the trial.
