A 19-year-old woman drowned after she was caught in rip currents while swimming in the sea at Kenton-on-Sea in the Eastern Cape on Sunday afternoon
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said the Port Alfred duty crew and several other roleplayers were activated.
Station commander Stephen Slade says the local woman got caught up in rip currents, which brought her back to towards the beach where a good samaritan waded into the surf and brought her to the beach.
He says a bystander-initiated CPR until paramedics arrived. They continued with advanced life support but the female was declared dead on the scene.
The name of the victim had not yet been released.
