Suspect killed by police following house robbery in PE

An armed robbery suspect was gunned down by police members from the Mount Road cluster in Port Elizabeth on Monday night.

Spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge says his accomplice sustained gunshot wounds to both his legs while two other men remain on foot.

He says the drama began with a house robbery in Kwanobuhle where a couple was first tied up before the armed men stole their VW Polo.

Beetge says in less than an hour their members spotted the vehicle speeding on the R335 Addo Road at about 9.30 pm.

As the Polo sped past police members tried to stop it and a brief car chased ensued.

According to police the suspects then opened their doors and started firing shots at police who returned fire.

The suspects finally stopped their vehicle and ran away in different directions.

Beetge says one suspect continued to fire shots at police who returned fire.

They managed to arrest a 25-year-old man who was wounded in both legs, while another suspect died on the scene.

Two air operated replica firearms were also confiscated on the scene.

Beetge says it is alleged that the real firearm was with the two suspects who managed to evade arrest.

The wounded suspect was taken to the Dora Nginza Hospital for treatment and will appear in court soon where he will face charges of house robbery, attempted murder and possession of a stolen vehicle.
