At least seven prisoners were injured in an accident on the N2 outside East London not far from Berlin.
Eastern Cape police said the accident happened on Saturday at about 11:00 am.
"It is alleged that two Correctional Services officials were transporting seven prisoners from Mdantsane prison to Middleburg prison when the accident occurred," SAPS said.
All the occupants were rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear at this stage.
Police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.
