Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon and wife make their first public appearance(pics)....

They opted against a fancy honeymoon but last night Cynthia Nixon and Christine Marinoni enjoyed their first glamorous night out as newlyweds.

The happy couple - who tied the knot last month - posed together on the red carpet at the 2012 Tony Awards and also showed off their wedding rings.

Happy to support Nixon, Marinoni also stepped aside to let the Sex and the City star enjoy the limelight on her own too.

The 46-year-old star showed off her slender figure in a floor-length red dress that featured capped sleeves and a cowl neck.

She teamed it with a nude-coloured clutch bag, a gold bangle and of course, her understated wedding ring.

Nixon was still sporting a much shorter hairstyle after she cut all of her hair off to play a cancer patient in Broadway show Wit.

Unfortunately, Nixon lost out on best actress award last night, after being nominated for her part in the play, which was written by Margaret Edson.

The couple's wedding was confirmed in a statement by her publicist to People magazine last month which read: 'Cynthia Nixon and her girlfriend, Christine Marinoni, were legally married in the state of New York.'

The pair - who got engaged in 2009 - decided to wait to marry until it was legal to do so in New York state, which occurred last summer.
