Selebi now at private facility

Former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi has been transferred to a private facility for treatment, the Steve Biko Academic Hospital confirmed to Eyewitness News on Monday.

Selebi, who was serving a 15-year prison sentence on corruption charges, was released on medical parole earlier in July.

He is suffering from end-stage renal disease.

The Steve Biko Academic Hospital's CEO Dr Ernest Kenoshi confirmed that Selebi was transferred to the Jakaranda Hospital in Pretoria.



He would not say why Selebi decided to move, but did add that the former top cop was paying his own medical fees.

Kenoshi would also not state exactly when Selebi was transferred.

The New Age newspaper on Monday reported that Selebi had not been to the Steve Biko Academic Hospital for a week, even though doctors said he would need dialysis three times a day.

There were concerns that Selebi was getting preferential treatment at the state facility, following claims that he jumped a queue of about 80 patients who had been waiting for dialysis.
