SA Jazz Legend, Gloria Bosman will be joining the Morning Show on Thursday from 8:30am to chat about her gala event.
In a splendid mix of mature mastery meeting raw young talent, Port Elizabeth is in for a spectacular music event this Friday, 24 February. The Madiba Bay Youth Ensemble will form the backing for multi-award winning Afrojazz singing sensation Gloria Bosman and the legendary saxophonist Khaya Mahlangu.
The Madiba Bay Youth Ensemble is based in Nelson Mandela Bay. This 22-piece jazz orchestra is a multicultural ensemble that ranges between the ages of 16 and 26 and features some of the Bay’s finest young talent. The ensemble will not only serve as a platform to showcase talented young musicians, but perform in a series of concerts which will raise funds for an envisioned music centre where youngsters from underprivileged backgrounds can receive music training.
“We need to expose all segments of our community to music because we do not know where the future greats of our country will come from,” explains musical director and local producer Gareth Williams. “Music is a great vehicle for inspiration and this vibrant young ensemble will serve as a model for underprivileged children with a desire to make music.”
The members of the ensemble come from all across the Bay: from the Northern areas, Motherwell, New Brighton, Uitenhage, Zwide and various other suburbs of Port Elizabeth. Some of young performers have already made their mark include Phumlani Mtiti (saxophone) who has recently won a SAMA award for his debut album ‘Ological Studies’ and trombonist Kyle du Preez, a favourite at jazz festivals nationally and internationally.
The programme is a mix of South African favourites paying tribute to, among others, Bheki Mseleku and Winston Mankunku Ngozi, who have both left behind an incredible musical legacy. There are also some international arrangements of popular traditional tunes that will add sizzle to evening’s performance.
“To perform Big Band arrangements of music written by some of our country’s greatest composers is something very special. It is an exciting challenge for an artist like me who loves to keep exploring. I cannot wait to perform for the people of Mandela Bay” says Gloria Bosman.
