Apple launched its latest version of the iPad last Wednesday, but Core Group, distributors of Apple products in SA, says the real news for South Africans is that a cheaper version of the entry-level iPad 2 16GB Wi-Fi is going on sale from just R3 999.
(Note that you need a Wi-Fi environment, at home, at work or at your local coffee shop, to use it. The recommended retail prices of Wi-Fi and 3G version is still over R5 000, although there has been a price reduction).
Core says the iPad 2 16GB Wi-Fi and 16GB Wi-Fi & 3G will continue to be available as part of the iPad product range.
Apple did this price drop when it introduced the latest iPhone, so this reduction on its tablet was expected.
Back to the iPad 3, it offers a high speed 4G LTE network connection, which isn’t available in SA yet. It’s unlikely that we’ll have 4G networks until next year.
According to the Daily Mail in London, the data-heavy apps built for the new tablet’s Retina screen could also land consumers with “bill shocks”.
Just 20 iTunes downloads could eat up the full capacity of many data plans.
Features we will be able to take advantage of are the much faster processor and a Full HD display. – The Star
