You’d never guess who’s beaten prostate cancer!
. Nelson Mandela
The great man himself was diagnosed with prostate cancer in July 2001 at the age of 83.
Sixteen years earlier he had undergone surgery to remove benign tumours on his prostate.
Upon initial examination, doctors said the tumour was microscopic and would not require any surgery, so Mandela instead opted for seven weeks of radiation.
Bobby De Niro was diagnosed back in 2003 and underwent extensive treatment. His doctors predicted a full recovery and he was given a clean bill of health not too long after his diagnosis.
The longest lasting Bond (12 years in the role) was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1993.
Moore underwent a radical prostatectomy (full removal of the prostate gland) soon after being diagnosed. He made a full recovery from the operation, but in his memoirs he wrote that the experience changed his life forever.
At the age of 61, Andrew Lloyd Webber was treated for early prostate cancer. In 2010, he received a clean bill of health and spoke out in favour of prostate cancer screening for all men over 50.
In April 2012, the partner of the late Farah Fawcett (the original blonde Charlie’s Angel – who can forget that pic) was diagnosed with stage 2 prostate cancer.
Doctors said the prognosis was less serious than originally thought, but that he would be treated with the same seriousness as many other prostate cancer patients.
O’Neal said that he felt grateful that it had been detected early, as he hated the way Fawcett had suffered during her battle with cancer.
