Umnombo Foundation

Umnombo Foundation was established in 2017 after recognizing the challenges faced by pupils at disadvantaged schools and learning institutions. In May 2019 three black women who grew up in Rural areas officially open an organization called “Umnombo Foundation.”

Our primary focus is education support for underprivileged schools in the Eastern Cape. Currently, we have adopted 6 schools with over 6500 beneficiaries from the schools. Covid had a huge impact on us as we could not do our outreach programs during lockdown.

Our schools had to be closed and students had no resources for homeschooling as the areas are mostly rural and township. This has had an impact on the pass rate and overall morale of the learners.

In September 2020 during the first lockdown, we managed to raise funds and donated sanitizers, masks, and fogging containers for the aid of decreasing the spread of Covid-19. This also came with educational material for learners to take home.

This took away from our focus on the educational support needs of the schools. Additionally, most of our reliable donors in the private and small business sector were not operating making it hard to donate regularly as they used to, so we had to downscale, relocate offices, and have skeleton staff, most of our volunteers we had to let go.

In 2022 we aim to resuscitate our core activities and find new donors. The organization is in touch with all the adopted schools and a needs analysis is underway per school as planning, budgeting  and then execution is of vital importance.
