The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (HSFSA) plays a leading role in the fight against preventable heart disease and stroke, with the aim of seeing fewer people in South Africa suffer premature deaths and disabilities. The HSFSA, established in 1980 is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that relies on external funding to sustain the work it carries out.
The HSFSA aims to reduce the cardiovascular disease (CVD) burden in South Africa and ultimately on the health care system of South Africa. Our mission is to empower people in South Africa to adopt healthy lifestyles, make healthy choices easier, seek appropriate care, and encourage prevention.
We are a national organization with branches in Cape Town (head office), Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Johannesburg. Our staff compliment consists of 15 permanent employees with a handful of interns and part-time staff.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa have 3 main work streams: Nutrition Science, Health Promotions, and Public Relations and Communications.
The HSFSA uses the national health events calendar as a reference point for carrying out campaigns and awareness drives at target groups or at the population level. As our mission states: “We intend to halt the rise of premature deaths through cardiovascular disease and cerebrovascular disease (CVD) in South Africa and promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles.”
Ultimately, we aim to reduce the burden placed on the South African healthcare system by cardiovascular disease. Our involvement in advocacy work to influence health and fiscal policy development is an exciting journey and our venture into the research space is even more exciting. However, on a day-to-day basis, our workstreams go far in reaching our goals.
