The Carel Du Toit Centre for the Deaf on Algoa Cares

Algoa Cares  August 17th : Carel Du Toit Centre for the Deaf.

The Carel du Toit Centre in East London is an NPO that teaches pre-school deaf children from the Eastern Cape, to speak. (They do not use sign language.)  The children are fitted with hearing aids and cochlear implants.  They are  situated in the grounds of the Frere Hospital and  operate from Monday to Friday  from 7am till 5pm. This includes aftercare. The children have breakfast, sandwiches at snack time and a cooked meal for lunch every day.

The school offers the following services:

  • Weekly Parent Guidance, where parents are empowered with skills to teach their deaf children to speak using the Auditory-Verbal approach.

  • Individualised pre-school classes, where deaf children are accommodated daily and are taught to speak.

  • Mapping service provided by the Centre to assist cochlear implantees.

  • Language therapy where specific language goals are remediated on a one to one basis

  • Small foam mattresses (covered), pillows.

  • Puzzles (between 40 and 100 pieces.

  • Large plastic basins, non-slip matting for the children?s bathroom. 

  • Simple books for young children

  • Trampolines (small for indoor use) or one large with a net for outdoor use.
