TB Proof

Algoa Cares March 23rd March : TB Proof

TB Proof is a non-profit organization  founded by South African health care workers and students as a result of their experience with occupational TB and especially, drug resistant TB .  It is a well documented fact that health care workers are at a 6 times higher risk of contracting drug resistant TB.  Ahead of World TB Day, which falls on March the 24th, this NPO have come up with an initiative called #UnmaskStigma . This Initiative aims to inform health care workers and the public about TB and the false beliefs surrounding the disease that often stops people from getting themselves tested as soon as they may suspect that something is wrong. TB Proof are advocating that as many South Africans as possible wear a mask on World TB Day as a way of showing solidarity with TB patients  by walking a ‘mile in their shoes’. Sadly TB continues to be a leading cause of death in South Africa, It is estimated that about 80 per cent of the population is infected with TB.
