Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team. S.M.A.R.T. is a NON-PROFIT organization based in Mossel Bay, Western Cape. S.M.A.R.T. volunteers respond to stranded Marine animals in distress, caring, treating (at the very reputable Hartenbos Animal Clinic) and releasing back into the ocean once the animal is back to perfect health. S.M.A.R.T. works closely with the professional staff of Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town and Bayworld Oceanarium in Port Elizabeth. Animals that require long term rehabilitation are transported, to either one for monitoring and care. Valuable scientific data is collected and processed to enhance the understanding of these most valuable creatures. Marine animals regularly or occasionally encountered are Cape Fur Seals, other Seal species, occasional Dolphin strandings, occasional Whale strandings, Sea Turtles, wounded or contaminated. S.M.A.R.T. operates under the authority of the DEA, in collaboration with Cape Nature and SANPARKS.

Projects are ongoing. Animals are secured and protected on the beach, inspected for injury and where possible, transported to the Hartenbos Animal Clinic for Veterinary care. Once healed, these animals are transported back to the beach and released under strict supervision. Baby Seals are transported on a boat back to Seal Island and released. A very high survival rate is achieved.
