Phakamisani Abantwana, meaning Uplift the Children, is a Soup kitchen, which operates under the auspices of St Saviours Anglican Church in Walmer. This feeding scheme feeds in excess of 4000 (four thousand people a week).
Twice a week, volunteers cut, peel and prepare vegetables for the soup urn in the church kitchen.
The buckets of prepared soup, together with bread and a once-a-week cooked meal, are processed and packed for delivery to schools, creches, old age homes, and organizations (Salvation Army, Forest Hill Neighbourhood Watch).
In addition, monthly food parcels are also distributed around our metro.
We rely on ongoing donations of vegetables and meat sourced from supermarkets, cash donations, and ongoing church fundraising events such as car boot sales, trivia evenings , sales of second-hand items from the church shop ‘The Beehive’, and the like.
As hunger is an ever-growing humanitarian issue worldwide and in Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth, the ongoing need and growing demand is putting pressure on resources.
In order to alleviate this the church has also started a comprehensive vegetable garden on the church premises to grow its own vegetables to augment the growing need for food.
This too is operated by church volunteers.
