St Francis Hospice was established in 1984 by a group of committed individuals with a shared vision to provide care and support for those living with life-limiting illnesses such as Cancer, HIV/AIDS or Motor Neurone disease. This vision became a reality in 1986, initially through a home care service, and in 1988, backed by the generosity of the community, a small In-patient Unit was opened. The latter was closed in 2005, due to financial constraints & emphasis placed on caring for patients in their own homes.
July 1997 saw the establishment of a rural outreach in the Kouga area, when a branch of Hospice opened in Humansdorp, offering care to patients as far afield as Tsitsikamma. In 1999 an outreach into Uitenhage and the surrounding areas commenced.
We provide palliative care to patients and give care and support to their families.
You have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness such as Cancer, HIV/AIDS, or Motor Neurone disease. You understandably feel afraid, uncertain, and angry. Our professional Hospice nursing staff will support and care for you, striving to ensure that you live each day to the fullest, with dignity and free of pain.
When is it Time for Hospice?
“I wish I had chosen hospice care sooner,” is a common sentiment expressed by hospice patients and their families and even medical professionals who refer patients to St Francis Hospice. If you are asking yourself whether it is time to choose hospice care, the answer is likely yes.
St Francis Hospice often finds that those who receive our specialized care early in the process of a life-limiting illness often improve temporarily and are thus able to experience the benefits of pain relief, symptom management and comfort care, which all assist in the easing of anxiety, depression and fatigue.
