SPF - Small Projects Foundation

Small Projects Foundation (SPF) works with communities and community service providers where they draw on their own knowledge and resources, to identify constraints that face them; and develop plans to use their knowledge and take action in managing challenges facing these communities.

We strengthen the systems of health facilities through capacity building, training and mentoring to embed models creating sustainability beyond funding term. We train and mentor community health care workers, members of community-based organisations and learner support agents in various skills; providing them with knowledge, skills and competence to provide the necessary support to communities.

The Small Projects Foundation (SPF) has been operating in the community development field for 33 years since 7 January 1988. It has also been working in the primary health care and education fields since 1996 (23 years).

SPF is and has been working in rural and urban areas of the Eastern Cape Province in all 7 districts.

SPF staff has been working with the Amathole District, Buffalo City Municipality, Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality and OR Tambo District Health Offices on a Nutrition and feeding programme to identify malnutrition, provide nutritional supplements and develop home gardens and nutritious food preparation. SPF worked with the Department of Environment Affairs and Tourism to develop the Mdantsane Greening Programme that rolled out over 12 000 home gardens and 23 home gardening and eco clubs in 23 schools from 2007 – 2010. It developed home gardens through training and support for over 6000 families in OR Tambo District under the Kistefos AIDS Action Programme.

SPF was also the Provincial Implementer for the Community Work Programme of COGTA for the OR Tambo and Alfred NZP District from 2012 – 2014 and established gardens, provided static water tanks and increased food security across 10 municipalities in the area.

SPF has managed the capacity building of over 52 community-Based organisations in the Eastern Cape. It has experience of developing an institutional mechanism for organisations to access services and to monitor and evaluate the work of such organisations through ward-based forums, community scorecards and Quality Improvement Tools.

The systems and models developed by SPF are working and continue to be replicated and sustained.

 Current Projects

 SPF Call Centre:

Was established in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the outbreak of the virus, Care Workers were going to homes, schools and clinics to enrol orphans and vulnerable children into the various SPF programmes. This involved a lot of face-to-face interaction and a lot of travelling. COVID-19 changed all of that and coming up with new ways of working was our goal. We had to create a way to reach our beneficiaries.

Gender-Based Violence was further highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, perpetrators of violence were confined to their homes with survivors. This prompted us to create an Emergency response unit, with qualified and experienced social workers to respond to calls 24 Hours a day.

Kistefos  AS funded Health Models:

We wish to take what we have learned from current programs, methodologies and tools and test and validate them through published and peer-reviewed research as proof of the working Kistefos funded Health Models in the new clinic. This will ensure the uptake of proven methodologies by government departments and facilities.

Nomzamo Special Care Project:

SPF has been working in partnership with the Rausch Partners Foundation from Switzerland for a year and achieved significant milestones in assisting Canaan Care Centre in East London. Providing them with custom made wheelchairs and a scenery park.

With assistance from Rausch Partners Foundation, we will be providing custom made beds for 81 disabled children provide them with special crockery and water tanks as there is often no water supply from the municipality.

The overall aim of the Nomzamo Project is to create a safe and healthy environment for disabled children.
