SPCA Uitenhage and District

The mission of the SPCA is to prevent cruelty and the abuse of animals, educate the public about animal welfare, and promote awareness of problems of animal cruelty. We do outreach and both pro-active and reactive work.

We don’t turn any animal away. No matter what the breed, condition, age or reason for animals being brought to the SPCA, we’re here for them, day and night. We’re on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to respond to rescues and emergencies involving animals.

Please contact us on 082 905 4716 in case of an after-hours emergency in the Uitenhage or Despatch area!

Animal Clinic

Our particular SPCA does not have an onsite vet. We can only provide primary healthcare such as the treatment of small wounds that don't require stitches, dipping for ticks and fleas etc. If your pet has a SERIOUS illness they will need to be taken to a vet for treatment. We are not longer allowed to innoculate the public's pets, we can only innoculate cats and dogs available for adoption at our own SPCA.

At the moment we are struggling due to the lockdown, please read our Facebook post below, if you can assist please contact us. Our most pressing needs at the moment are financial, we also need hose pipes, catmor kitten food, puppy pellets, black bags, washing powder, Jik, sanitiser and if you can find it in your heart, our staff are desperate for basic toiletries - even toilet paper. Thank you so much to everyone who has so generously donated to assist us at this time.

Day #16. We trust our loyal supporters are having a blessed, albeit different Easter under lockdown. Sadly SPCA Uitenhage finds itself in a very unhappy situation whereby we have completely run out of funds.

The Municipality has not paid us since December despite repeated requests and advising them of our dire financial position. Luckily we have food for our animals but we won't be able to pay our staff after Tuesday, bearing in mind that five of our staff have locked down at the kennels of their own free will and most are the sole breadwinners of their homes.

We can also not put fuel in our vehicles or pay any of our other operating costs.

We are in a desperate situation, and we are humbly requesting urgent assistance to help keep our doors open. We're on our knees, with our heads in our hands. We know times are tough for everyone and are embarrassed to once again ask for help given the fantastic support we have had thus far.

Please donate if you can. No amount is too small and would be so greatly appreciated.

If you are able to make a donation, our details are below.

Inspectorate & Humane Education

Sterilizations
We don't have our own vet so we don't do our own sterilizations. We have to use an outside vet. If you have limited or no income you might qualify for our SPCA alimony system whereby we can try to assist you with reduced sterilization rates. To confirm income we would need 3 months worth of bank statements and your Sassa card. We will need to conduct a means test. You would need to apply for such by coming into our offices and asking for Gail or calling 041 992 3016 or 041 922 4528.

Adoption & Strays

Every year, there are thousands of animals that are abused, abandoned or left homeless. With your help we are able to find them the loving homes that they so desperately need. If you're looking for a new pet, please visit the SPCA rather than a pet shop or breeder. Not only will you save a life – when you adopt a pet from the SPCA you know you are getting a healthy animal. Every dog and cat offered for adoption has been thoroughly examined at our clinic, de-wormed and inoculated. We also have a strict sterilisation policy that ensures pets are only re-homed after being spayed or neutered.

Boarding Kennels

We accommodate cats and small, medium and large breed dogs at very reasonable rates at our clean and comfortable Uitenhage SPCA boarding kennels.

Lost & Found

If you find a lost dog or cat – please bring it to the SPCA, or keep it safely in your home or yard and call us to come and collect it. We will try to trace the owner. You can assist by asking around the neighbourhood in which the animal was found to see if anyone is missing their pet. The SPCA shelters stray animals for 7 days before they become available for adoption. A “lost and found” registry is kept and owners hopefully claim their pets within this period. A joyful reunion is one of the highlights of our day!
